During their research and development campaigns in conjunction with the former Agricultural Technical Services, Radium identified a need for deep-rip traffic control applications in some parts of South Africa. The initial tests showed that when ripping in specific soil types, in this case sandy soils, when tines penetrated deeper than 500 mm, a compaction layer could form from the bottom upwards, causing a tunnel-like effect deep below the surface, ultimately causing greater compaction than there had been to begin with. After several experiments, Radium developed the dual tine ripper. The concept was to have two or three tines running directly behind one another, with each tine working only 300 mm of soil. However, the positioning of the tines was critical in order for each shear to work in the vacuum caused by the shear in front, otherwise twice as much work would be required, which would cause the energy requirements to increase. With the correct shears, sequence and size, draught requirements are considerably reduced, thus using 40% less energy. The dual tine ripper is able to create an ideal root zone, up to 1000 mm deep, without any side compaction. Compaction around and below the deeper-working shears is eliminated, thus allowing water and roots to move deeper beneath the surface, which in turn encourages improved and more consistent growth.
